Glaze exploration and innovation is the focus of my artistic efforts and my ceramic work. This focus on surface influences the forms I
make, the scale of the work and the creative process.
Unlike many other ceramic artists, I start the creative process with extensive glaze testing and then make ceramic forms that, I hope, will accentuate the glaze surface. Much of my studio time consists of mixing and testing glazes, experimenting with application techniques and altering the fired glaze in a way that will enhance the final product.
As I test and develop glaze surfaces, I’m interested in color response from different material combinations in the glaze mix, crystal formation, glaze sheen, and post-firing techniques that can transform a glaze into a better version of the original. My ceramic work changes often and sometimes dramatically with every "breakthrough" in my glaze research.
