Learn about the process

  • Every piece in the woodfired collection has been through Logan Wanamaker's Anagama kiln we call the Happy Kiln. We fire the kiln around 3 times a year and it is a very labor intensive process. It starts with 3 days of loading and is then followed by 4-5 five days of firing. The firing process means stoking the kiln with wood every couple of minutes, 24 hours a day, for five days straight. This labor of love becomes a collaboration with the other artists involved through the stacking of the kiln to every piece of wood thrown into it. This hard work creates beautiful and unique surfaces. The outsides of the pots don't have glaze and are instead left to the movement of the flame that rushes throughout the kiln to create its surface design. Each firing is different and creates a world of never ending possibilities.

  • After experiencing 4 Wood Firings in the Happy Kiln I have started to grasp creating in collaboration with the kiln. These forms have been designed with the flame path of the kiln in mind as well as how different clays react to the wood ash.
